THE BROGNA SHEEP OF LESSINIA
The Brogna sheep is the only native breed of the Veronese mountains that in the past played a fundamental role in the Veronese economy. During the period of the Scaligeri, many MALGHE were built in the Veronese mountains. This is how farms for the production of PRECIOUS WOOL are born and a real trade begins. Veronese wool, in medieval times, was already famous and renowned. Until 1500, products made with the wool of local sheep experienced a thriving market.
Over the years, interest in this breed of sheep, which was so important in the past, decreases, almost risking extinction.
Only in 2012 was an ASSOCIATION established to protect the species with an ambitious and important purpose:
“To promote the enhancement of the products obtained from this animal, to allow breeders to remain in LESSINIA”.
The main road is to embrace quality and an organic farming philosophy.
A triple aptitude breed: milk, meat, wool.
